Volcom, a prominent lifestyle brand, was established in 1991 by Richard "Wooly" Woolcott and Tucker "T-Dawg" Hall. The idea for the brand emerged during a snowboarding trip to Tahoe, U.S., after which Woolcott and Hall decided to start a clothing company that embodied their passion for boardsports. Volcom's ethos was founded on the experiences of its creators in skateboarding, surfing, snowboarding, music, and art, united under the slogan 'Youth Against Establishment'. The brand operated initially from the founders' homes in Newport Beach and Huntington Beach, with a focus on spirit and creativity rather than conventional business know-how. Remarkably, the clothing sales for the first year were $2,600. Volcom's first professional skateboarder sponsorship was with Chet Thomas, and in 1995, it became the first action sports company to create a record label, Volcom Entertainment. Volcom underwent significant changes over the years. In April 2005, it was renamed "Volcom, Inc." and became a publicly traded entity on NASDAQ in June 2005, raising $89 million through its initial public offering. In 2008, Volcom made its first acquisition, purchasing Electric Visual Evolution LLC for $25.3 million. Then, in 2011, the French company PPR (later known as Kering) acquired Volcom Inc. for $608 million, with the backing of Volcom's board and shareholders. Further expanding its global presence, Volcom opened its first retail store in Los Angeles in 2002. Since then, it has established numerous stores across the United States, Canada, and internationally in cities like Barcelona, Tokyo, London, and Buenos Aires. In April 2019, Authentic Brands Group announced the acquisition of Volcom from Kering. Today, Volcom stands as one of the largest lifestyle brands in the industry, deeply rooted in surf, skate, and snowboard culture, and known for promoting creative expression among the younger generation.
